Pit Stop
A moment of labour etched in stark contrast,
Figures toil under shadows that bind and cast.
Machines and men in a silent, gritty bond,
Effort and determination push them beyond.
This monochromatic artwork employs chiaroscuro techniques,
Using bold black-and-white contrasts for dramatic intensity.
Rooted in realism, it captures raw, human perseverance,
Highlighting forms through minimalistic yet striking details.
Artist’s Note
This gouache painting, created on an envelope as part of my ‘Mail Art’ series, offers a playful and contemporary reinterpretation of Caravaggio’s ‘The Beheading of St John’. I transformed the solemn drama of the original masterpiece into an unexpected scene set at a pit stop — an allusion to modern pauses, repairs, and transitions in the race of life. The work highlights how timeless human gestures and tensions can be transposed into surprising and humorous new contexts.
